The Hidden Downsides of Cheap Business Class Fares in 2025 | What’s Not Included Anymore

Seat selection fees, missing lounge access, and stripped-down perks, here’s what business class travelers need to know before booking.

Airlines are increasingly hiding the real cost of Business Class tickets. Not long ago, perks like free seat selection, lounge access, two checked bags, and full mileage earning were always included. Now, with so-called “Light Business Fares,” the picture has changed.

That tempting €1,500 round-trip ticket might hit your wallet harder if you’re craving those perks you’ve always loved.

Seat Selection Is No Longer Free on Many Airlines

Business class used to guarantee not just comfort, but also flexibility in choosing your seat.

Today, however, many airlines charge extra if you want to pick your seat in advance.

Examples of current seat selection fees for long haul flights (one-way):

  • Lufthansa (Allegris Cabin): €0–600
  • Swiss (Throne Seat): €100–200
  • British Airways: €110–155
  • KLM / Air France (Light & Standard Fare): €155

Frequent flyers with mid-tier status (like BA Silver) may still get free seat selection, but rules vary by airline.

If you’re traveling solo, not choosing in advance may not matter much. But for couples or families, it can easily add hundreds of euros just to sit together.

Lounge Access Isn’t Always Included

Surprisingly, some business fares no longer guarantee lounge access. Airlines such as Finnair, KLM/Air France, and even Qatar Airways now sell “Light” fares in Business Class that exclude lounges unless you upgrade.

Don’t assume lounge access is included, always check the fare rules. If you hold a frequent flyer status or a Priority Pass, you’re safe. Otherwise, this could mean paying extra or losing out on one of the most valued perks.

Checked Baggage May Be Limited

Traditionally, business class included two checked bags. Today, some Light fares cut this down to just one, or none! For instance, Finnair’s Business Light includes no checked luggage at all. On some routes, even carry-on allowances are more restricted.

Real Cost Example

That attractive €1,500 business class fare to Asia might actually cost:

  • +- €220 seat selection
  • +- €80 lounge access (paid separately)
  • +- €100 for one extra bag

Total cost: €1,800

Of course, this depends on whether you actually want all those extras, but it shows how quickly the savings can shrink.

How to Book Smart

  • Always read the fare details — “Business Light” ≠ full-service business class
  • If traveling with others, consider seat selection costs upfront
  • Calculate the real total cost, not just the advertised fare
  • Look for airlines or fare types that still offer the full business class experience

Bottom Line

Airlines launched “Light” fares to create the illusion of cheaper business class while boosting revenue. These stripped-down fares help fill premium cabins, which, after COVID, have recovered more slowly than economy, without forcing airlines to deeply discount their full-service business tickets.

At the same time, airlines want to lock travelers into their brand. Frequent flyers still get free seat selection, lounge access, and baggage, but only if they maintain status. To get that status, you need to fly (and pay) more, ensuring airlines make additional revenue.

For travelers willing to give up these comforts, however, Light fares can be a great way to score a cheaper business class ticket.
